Language and Literacy Education: Cross-National Experiences

Friday, December 10, 2021 – 8am-1:15pm

Webinar Theme:

Literacy is assumed to be a highly contested word as it is strongly marked by distinct competing views. Literacy and language policies in different parts of the world have attempted to either preserve/enhance their well-succeeded local practices or tackle their poor literacy performance levels. Epistemological and political clashes around literacy and language theory and practice become ever more complex vis-à-vis new social demands. One example is the emergence of new multilingual and intercultural landscapes resulting from migration, displacement, and human mobility. More recently, new challenges arise with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic as it has unquestionably exacerbated deep inequities in the availability of education. By taking the premise that literacy and equity are intrinsically related and by acknowledging INEI’s commitment with the re-envisioning of educational policies, practices, and research towards more socially-just societies, the School of Education from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, invites INEI faculty and graduate students to take part in the webinar “Language and Literacy Education: Cross-National Experiences” to share their expertise and engage in fruitful discussions around any of the following topics:

  • Early/ Adult Literacy Education
  • New Literacies and Multiliteracies
  • Critical Literacy and Critical Pedagogy
  • Bilingualism, Multilingualism and Translanguaging
  • Language and Literacy Policies
  • Language and Literacy Curriculum
  • Language and the Media
  • Language and Globalization
  • Language and Migration
  • Language and Difference
