Lesson Study for Teacher Professional Development
Período: 26/03/2025 a 27/03/2025
The aim of this course is to acquaint the students with the philosophy of lesson study, which is teacher ownership, teacher professionalism, student learning-focused dialogue, teacher collaboration, and teacher professional community, and to provide the experience of lesson study and the opportunity to discover its value.
The students of this course can:
- Understand the philosophy of lesson study,
- Understand how lesson study is practiced in Japan and Brazil;
- Explore the factors to practice lesson study in Brazil;
- Reflect on their own understanding of teacher professional development and understand the importance of teacher collaboration in teacher professional development;
- Understand the procedure of lesson study and conduct it during the course.
Japanese Lesson Study has debuted in the world as an effective way to improve teaching and learning since Stigler & Hiebert’s (1999) work, The Teaching Gap. For decades, the philosophy of Lesson Study—teacher ownership, teacher professionalism, student learning-focused dialogue, teacher collaboration, and teacher
professional community—has attracted educators in many countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America (Cheung & Wong, 2014; Larssen et al., 2018; Willems & Van den Bossche, 2019; Yoshida et al., 2021). Lesson Study has become a global phenomenon in teacher education.
While localizing external concepts and policies, the original ideas are inevitably reshaped based on individual contexts (Steiner-Khamsi, 2004) and lesson study was also the case. From the perspective of comparative education, however, it is also essential to understand how the wish-to-borrow ideas are utilized in the original settings for the successful adoption of “alien” approaches “at home” (Phillips & Ochs, 2003, p. 459). For that reason, this course provides opportunities to capture Japanese lesson study from a bird’s eye view, conduct it in the classroom, and explore the factors to localize lesson study in Brazil successfully with those who wish to borrow
the idea of teacher professional development.
