Providing all students in diverse classrooms with the best possible learning opportunities is a significant pedagogical challenge. Developed at Stanford University, Complex Instruction (CI), is a pedagogical approach, to promote equity in diverse classrooms.
In Complex Instruction classrooms:
All students have equal access to academically rigorous curriculum and resources, equitable interactions with the teacher, equitable levels of whole class participation, and equal-status interactions with peers.
All students have multiple opportunities and varied ways to demonstrate their intellectual competence/ ways of being smart in the subject.
Students and teachers recognize many different intellectual abilities and define intelligence as incremental, flexible, multi-dimensional. (Cohen&Lotan, 2014)
Complex Instruction [previously known as Finding Out/Descubrimiento] implemented and evaluated since the 1980 s, has kept developing and is being adapted continuously to different contexts and needs.
The conference Complex Instruction research and practice: Working together for equity in diverse classrooms brings together experienced and new scholars from around the world to share ideas and experiences, and to develop new projects together.
We will meet in the beautiful city of Hamburg from September 3rd, 6 PM to September 7th 3 PM, get to know one another, discuss current and planned projects, different research approaches, the influence of context on the implementation of CI, and possibilities/ opportunities for cooperation and joint projects in the future. Researchers from Brazil, Switzerland, Hungary and Germany have confirmed their participation. Rachel Lotan, among them, is looking forward to re-connecting with colleagues and discussing how to make CI accessible to teachers in places where learning how to envision and build equitable classrooms has become an urgent need.
We invite you to submit a presentation of a project related to CI or its components (finished, in progress or planned). Please send an abstract (no more than 150-200 words) with its title in a word document via mail to agnaldoarroio@usp.br by May 31 t. Confirmation of acceptance will be sent in early June. If any questions arise, please feel free to contact us. For more information: andrea.schmitz@usp.br
